Christoph Grunenberg is the new director, and has been there barely a month. He confronts a major challenge, coming at a time when the city museums are reeling from the tragic death of Liverpool’s Director of Museums and Galleries, Sir Richard Wilson. Grunenberg’s solution is to provide art that can be enjoyed, that will inspire, but that is not replete with printed text and intellectual pretension. Having served a stint at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art, Grunenberg brings to Liverpool a refreshing blend of scholarship and accessibility. Frankfurt-born and still under 40, Grunenberg admires the German Kunsthalle model for a space holding changing exhibitions that allow the curator to play a creative role in cultural and regional life.
