The last Turner Prize?
There seems little more to be said of this drama. Although Martin
Creed is an appropriate winner for 2001, and Madonna in making the
award administered the expletive kick-start that she was bidden
to perform more skilfully than many truly would have imagined, the
ageing puppet show looks like finally expiring as the lights switch
off. Every act has its own time-check, the art world has moved on,
and the Turner Prize has indeed served its purpose. While Lars Nitve,
safely back in Sweden, now grapples with mould and closing galleries,
here Tate Modern contemplates the new Saatchi Gallery challenge
to be based in County Hall, near enough along the river to siphon
off visitors.
